My vote goes to wierd hybrid euphamisms. "Handicapable" for instance. Or anything with "challenged". Like "anally-challenged". Today I am feeling "anally-challenged". And I will sue you if you don't make your building comply with laws protecting "anally-challenged" people. -

Re: Strike These Words From The English Language...
Thu, January 17, 2008 - 10:22 AMI'm down with most of your choices, Howie, but what's wrong with "Sex Worker"? It's a generic term for a person in the sex industry, which covers a lot of ground, so it's not merely a euphemism for "whore." Sure, you can be specific, and say "stripper" or "porn model," but for a blanket term, I can't think of a better one right now. -

I AGREE...
Wed, January 30, 2008 - 9:09 PMthese words ARE getting VERY SUCKY but...
You sound like you work for the Ministry of Information.
And while were re-editing the dictionary of Tribe Verbiage, I suggest we strike these people from Tribe.net for jumping on the rampant Non-Conformists Bandwagon:
Poi (fire-swingers)
White guys and girls with dreads and exotic names like "Shanti"
DJ's
Tatooed freaks
Belly Dancers
The Bodily Pierced
Whatever Tribe
Oh and did I mention....dare I say it......BURNING MAN!!!!
SAID LIKE: "I wanna be a Non-Conformist like all my Poi-Swinging-Tatooed-Dreaded-Tongue-Dick-and-Clit-Pierced-Belly-Dancing-DJ-Burning Man Freak Friends!!"
I'm sure there's still room for some originality in there....somewhere.

Re: Strike These Words From The English Language...
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:11 PMSome of the words listed it's ridiculous to hate. Chakra, Kabbalah, namaste, etc... these are ancient terms from long traditions. Just because the west has recently discovered them and their meaning does not make them New Age. I am not one to use them often myself, mind you, but I definitely am glad that some in the West are looking beyond the stale Judeo-Christian traditions that have been pounded into our culture over generations, becoming more feeble and meaningless over time. Goddess? I prefer not to think of deities much at all, but if someone wants to think of a greater power as female, more power to him/her.
That said, I would be glad to see an end to the destruction of English by the abuse of nouns made into verbs. For example, can we no longer DIALOG, and instead, have a dialog, a discussion or talk? Also, words like "orientate". It's ORIENT, you ORIENT someone, not orientate them! And how about misuse of "myself"? "Jerry and myself went to the store." It's "Jerry and I went to the store." Does anyone say "Myself went to the store?" And another thing that bothers me: Q "How are you?" A "I'm good." You aren't (necessarily) GOOD, you're WELL. Good is an adjective. To say you're good means that you are a good person, not that you are in a good state.
So anyway, my point is, don't be so judgmental of people who are searching or who have found what works for them, but for Pete's sake, use your words correctly! -

Re: Strike These Words From The English Language...
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 9:24 AMWho's Pete?
If you are going to spend your time compiling lists of words to hate why not start with words that actually hurt people. Like say...nigger or faggot. There are plenty of terms used to put down and project hate at others. I did not see one that fits this category on your list anywhere???
I can't believe I even read this thread. It was a total waste of time except for the awesome advice about the crystal. I have a crystal up my ass right now!!!
namaste
ps This is the first time that I have used the term namaste but after reading this thread I'm starting to like it. Thank you for this culturally informative thread!

provowels
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 2:07 AMHere's the birth of a new word, let me know if you like it or not. Neologisms are always a bit dodgy until they gain memetic status.
The word is 'provowels'. As we are losing vowels to sms format, the only 2 that seem to have remained constantly used are I and U. In each case, they are used for pronouns. Hence the pro and vowel aspects of the new word.
Language must develop whether through cutting words, amalgamating words, or creating new ones.
Speech is all tongue in cheek...if you think about it...lol!
